SCADA Systems Engineering

Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems give system operators a visual real time view of their water or wastewater processes.  Utilizing a powerful desk top computer, SCADA graphical display software, and remote monitoring equipment, the SCADA system provides a "System Dashboard" for remote management of their system.  Radio telemetry is the typical backbone for data transmission from remote sites to a central office location.  Remote Terminal Units (RTU's) are used to take inputs from field instruments that allow system operating parameters and their corresponding values (ex:  tank levels, pressures, flows, pump motor status, chlorine residual, etc.) to be displayed on the graphical interface screen at the office.  The remote locations have SCADA control panels that incorporate programmable logic controllers (PLC’s) and radios to gather the digital information from the remote sites and then send them to the SCADA computer location.

In addition to displaying the current status of the system, the SCADA computer utilizies specialized hardware or software packages that can alarm operators via e-mails or text messages and also log information from the system to be used in regulatory reports.

All process control functions are resident at each site’s Remote Terminal Unit.  Absent the communication with the Master Terminal Unit, the RTU will maintain local control.

The SCADA Computer and Human Machine Interface Software is not necessary to sustain system operations in the event of system failure.  The Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC’s) at each site are primary in the control functions.

Redundancy or fail-over processes exist within the telemetry control system, to allow communication in the event the primary store-and-forward communication system fails.

The system is designed to rely on the most robust components in the system, i.e. PLC’s instead of PC-based software.

Telemetry System Design is the heart of the SCADA system and always begins with a radio path study.

Data is transferred using radio communication as the primary means.  Regardless of the effectiveness of your process control functions, if the telemetry function is not sound, the integrity of the system will be compromised. Therefore, our design process always begins with radio communication.
